I don't recognize it (I pretty much know Logic and AULab), but the article doesn't say anything about him using the AU version of their plugins. Wave Arts make them in all formats, so it could be anything.
Drums, Cymbals, Logic Studio, Filterscape, Amadeus

True, I assumed it was an audio unit since he's clearly running a Mac laptop

From the screen shot it looks like the name of the application upper left has two words, of approx equal length, which leads me to deduct: Digital Performer

I don't know DP, but maybe post this in the DP subforum and ask if it is...?
MBP, OSX 10.6, Logic 9, FCP7, Live 8. Web.

It's not DP. The mixer section looks like Pro Tools to me, although I see what you're saying about the two longer looking words as the app name.

Looks like Pro Tools to me too. Though I haven’t used it in a while so the darkness is new but that mixer view reminds me a lot of Pro Tools. Doesn’t Pro Tools also have the version number in the title sometimes? Maybe thats the longer “word” we cannot decipher?

Looks like Pro Tools but with a different app in the foreground, causing the longer app name.

Yep, it's ProTools 8.
