PSP MixPack 2: worth the upgrade?

Post by willb » 28 Apr 2008, 09:51

Hey, now that it's been out for a while, I'm wondering if anyone has a strong opinion about the MixPack upgrade. (I'm trying to decide whether or not to upgrade while it's still cheap....)

Upgrade? Log in to your PSP account and see what's there. I guess it depends on how long ago you bought MixPack1, but I could just download MixPack2 for free.
Must add though, that I bought MixPack1 only a few days before MixPack2 was released. The weird thing is that I never got any mail about the free upgrade from them and found out only through another user's forum post.

it's $49 for most of us to upgrade, not free.

i mostly use the mixpressor. i find it's cleaner and doesn't have as much distortion and low end grunt. you have to push the 'compression' knob a lot harder to get similar results. the controls are the same on both versions, but the presets aren't comparable at all at the same settings, so it's difficult to make a direct comparison

try the demo, dude.

I wish I had time to do just that before the price goes up, hence the stupid question. Thanks for the info, though -- a little "cleaner" is probably OK for most of my use.

i'm disappointed that there's no 'fat' mode on them though. why not give users the option? i'd use it on my 'money' tracks, vox etc

I'm not positive of this, but i think they're all FAT-mode-active by default now. I'm saying this based on the sound quality difference i'm hearing (especially the compressor) and the cpu usages, which are slightly higher than those of the v1's. They sound to me like they have that increase in hardwarey solidity that you get when turning on FAT mode in Vintage Warmer. Could write PSP to make sure, if you're concerned, but they definitely sound improved to me. My guess is that 'FAT mode' represents an improvement in algorithm that was a planned standard feature of v2 and all future releases, but was made a switchable option on VW2 purely for cpu usage concerns.
