How can I create my own scale?

Post by ty604 » 26 Jan 2010, 05:42

I'm doing a project and need to create my own frequencies/scale. For example C above Middle C vibrates at 512 Hz. I want to produce frequencies that aren't common scales i.e. 538 Hz which would be my custom C sound.

What would be the easiest way to do this AND make music with this scale?

Think of Eric Persing type sound scapes but more on the melodic ambient vibe using my original frequencies.

Thanks

Having never done this I’m not sure this would work. But I think all you’d need to do is get a sine wave generator and set it to the frequencies you require and bounce them. Then import those files into your favorite sampler.

max msp my good man, or if your using logic then set the ESX24 keyboard>pitch modulation to a different amount to get a different range over the octave.

Or go old school and get an old yamaha DX/TX/SY synth that allows you to program the tuning - as used by phillip glass and others.

To make a scale in Scala .scl format, you can just type your frequencies into a text file, and load it up with any synth that supports the format. There's a list of some at the Scala site: http://www.huygens-fokker.org/scala/ . My own softsynth, Aalto, also supports loading .scl files.
