Slate Pro Audio has released FG-Stress, a licensed 1:1 emulation of the Empirical Labs Distressor. Like its hardware counterpart, FG-Stress is one of the most musical and versatile compressors available. It can morph into compressors of the past, including VCA, Opto, and Tube models. Every aspect of the Distressor has been recreated, including the unique topology of each of its ratios, and its proprietary audio and detection path options. Slate even promises that, if you own the hardware, and calibrate the gain reduction of the Distressor to FG-Stress (since using differently calibrated converters will alter the gain reduction), you will be able to match it with the software minus some “possibly minimal discrepancy due to converter differences.”
Slate FG-Stress is available now for $249, with an intro price of $199. FG-Stress is also available in the Slate Everything Bundle along with every other Slate Digital plugin and two third-party plugins. It requires macOS 10.7 or later, an AU, VST, or AAX plugin host, and an iLok 2 or 3.
