AudioThing has released Type B, a plugin inspired by the famous vintage Aphex Aural Exciter Type B. The original hardware was designed to add presence and brightness to vocal or instrument tracks, generating fourth and fifth harmonics above the frequency of the input signal. As such, it was often used to enhance dull recordings where the high frequency content was missing due to tape overdubs. An equalizer will only boost what’s already in your signal, an exciter can generate high-frequency content that was not part of the original signal. The Type B plugin also lets you control more aspects of the exciter circuit emulation, giving you access to the internal filter, the harmonic generator and more.
AudioThing Type B is available now for $59, with an introductory price of $29. Owners of Type A can get Type B with an additional discount. It requires macOS 10.7 or later and an AU, VST, or AAX plugin host.
