Mac OS X 10.7 Lion compatibility

Post by G » 19 Jul 2011, 16:22

Apple announced during their quarterly earnings call today that OS X 10.7 "Lion" will ship tomorrow, 20 July 2011.

Parts of the Audio Units plug-in spec may have changed, with some developers receiving notices from Apple that their products will require an update. Additionally, Rosetta—the ability to emulate old PowerPC code—is being removed in OS X 10.7. All of your apps will need to be Intel-ready or Universal Binary. Be careful about upgrading to Lion before you check compatibility with everything you run now.

This topic is for compatibility news or issues related to OS X 10.7. Users and devs, please update at will.

Yesterday we released compatibility updates for all the Redmatica apps.
OS X 10.7 is now the recommended OS X version to use for our apps.

Ableton
We are currently working on a compatibility update to address existing issues with Live in OS X 10.7, which will be coming soon. Until this update is available, we do not recommend updating to Lion.

Spectrasonics
OSX 10.7 Lion Compatibility

General Compatibility

Our plug-ins Omnisphere, Trilian, and Stylus RMX have not been completely tested under OSX 10.7 Lion, and therefore we recommend waiting to upgrade to OSX 10.7 Lion until we can complete our tests and announce they are fully compatible with this new operating system.

Other Known Issues

The Spectrasonics folder which contains data files for Omnisphere, Trilian, and Stylus RMX is in ~/Library/Application Support. Apple has chosen to make the ~/Library folder hidden in the Finder in OSX 10.7 Lion. If you need to access that folder to copy user presets or move your SAGE or STEAM folder, you can do so by entering ~/Library/Application Support/Spectrasonics into the Finder's "Go to Folder" dialog.

Legacy instruments Atmosphere, Trilogy, and Classic Stylus are not compatible with OSX 10.7 Lion.

At first Logic will have to be 10.7 ready officially.

With luck this might force developers to properly separate Factory and User presets!
This would greatly reduce the risk of data loss if you need to clean install everything and assumed (incorrectly) that all presets were in your user folder.

Agreed. Fixed position inside your OS for anything large like that is bad, anyway. Adobe (large page with many details) also mentions the ~/Library/ folder thing, front and center. I guess too many people were breaking stuff in there. Now if we could define one standard place to install presets and user manuals..

It would actually benefit everyone to just standardise this sort of thing. For users with a lot of different instruments and plug-ins playing the game of hunt where they put the user presets folder(s) / manuals is a time waster. It would simplify support for software developers, less chance of users screwing up!

In the short term this will "break" a number of plug-ins.
As usual best to hold off on production machines for some months to give third party plug-in developers time to catch up.

Steinberg

Cubase 6.0.2 (all tiers) and Halion 4.x seem to be ok in both 32 and 64-bit mode. Wavelab 7.1.0 works in 32-bit. Nuendo 5.1.1 gets a big "no" but a Nuendo 5.5 update is planned for early August. See the page for much more info.

Propellerhead
Our current products have been tested on this new OS X version and we are happy to report that Reason and Record are fully compatible.

ReCycle and Lion
Apple has removed Rosetta support from Mac OS X 10.7 (applications relying on Rosetta will not run). The current version of ReCycle is relying on Rosetta and will not run if you upgrade to Mac OS X 10.7.

Registered ReCycle owners can sign up for the ReCycle 2.2 beta here. ReCycle owners will be notified when ReCycle 2.2 is released.

Native Instruments
Native Instruments has conducted initial compatibility tests with pre-release versions of Mac OS X 10.7, and has found an issue that causes the 64-bit versions of NI applications to crash both when used stand-alone and as a plug-in.

The cause of this issue has been successfully determined, and updates for the affected products are currently in development, with their respective release planned for September or earlier. In the meantime, users should utilize the 32-bit versions of the respective NI applications, or consider to refrain from updating to Mac OS X 10.7 for the time being.

The following products have so far been updated with a 64-bit fix for Mac OS X 10.7 "Lion":
BATTERY 3.2.2

Audio Ease Plugins Altaverb and Speakerphone crash the AUveval in Logic, but you can force them to open if you go to Logic's AU manager check the box next to them. The evaluator will still crash but they will stay enabled and are found under incompatible>Audio Ease>Plugin name.

Then they work as expected. So far so good at least with them.
Have fun,
