multrack sessions (36ch) on SSD

Post by bungee » 19 Nov 2013, 06:25

I have a Macbook pro early 2011.
For my multrack sessions (36ch) I would like to replace my external FW800 Gdrive for an internal SSD.
I record in Metric Halo's MIO recorder (3x MH2882) or in LogicProX with RME hdspe MADI fx (in a Sonnet TB adapter)
I consider two options:

1) Replace my internal drive for a 500gb SSD and record all the tracks to it.
My concern is that this is also my system disk…

2) Replace both my internal disk and optical drive for two 250gb SSD's and use the 2nd disk for recording…

What do you think?
All ideas, comments, recommendations etc. welcome.
Thanks. :)

I also have an Early 2011 MBP, I recently took the two internal drives approach.

For my system drive I use a 750GB Momentus Hybrid drive, for the project drive a 1TB 7200rpm drive.

For me capacity was more important, I wanted to have My EXS and Kontakt sample libraries on my system drive.

And I also picked up a Newer Tech Mini Stack Max with a 1TB 7200 HD.

About the same price as two 500Gb SSD, with more capacity.

I've never saturated a 7200rpm hard drive, even on FW400.

Thanks gdoubleyou for your reply.
What is your track count when recording?
I record live shows, 36 channels (2hours and 15 mins.)
I think your configuration is really interesting.:)

For me it was a better value with the hybrid drive, 7200 rpm HD, and Mini Stack Max vs two SSD.

I've seen the Momentus 750GB/7200 rpm on sale for less than $120, Seagate will soon be releasing 1TB model.

I have more of a Project studio, I don't have the space to track full bands.

My setup allows me to be mobile for recording vocalist, and collaboration when they're available.
And I don't have to bother with cables and wall warts for an external drive.

So you must be coming off the house mix, I presume.

Are you having issues with the FW800 in theory it should be able to handle hundreds of tracks, are you daisy-chaining all of the Firewire devices?

Replace the optical drive with an SSD. You can get a SATA caddy shaped like the optical drive. Run your OS on the main drive and the media files from the SSD. Your main drive can be an SSD as well. Then archive your projects you have completed and do not need on the drive anymore on a NAS drive connected through a gigabit router with the MBP also connected through Ethernet (faster transfer than 10/100 router and/or wifi) or by burning a data DVD or BluRay with an external USB burner. This is my workflow and I love it.
