Upgrading to at least OS X Yosemite

Post by funkyappledog » 22 Oct 2015, 01:00

G how to get up from 10.8.5 and logic 10.0.7 to at least Yosemite with 10.1
Any thoughts on the process you can share. Can i go straight to Yosemite From Lion.?
Downloadable?
Obviously my mac is done with any self updating and is quite content with itself but
i would like to catch up.

I believe you can go directly from any OS X version that has the Mac App Store, so 10.6.8 or later.

Since I'm planning to upgrade from the old Mac Pro to a MacBook Pro early next year, I chose this year to finally clean house: Wipe the drive and do a fresh install of everything. It's a lot of work, but it was worthwhile. Everything runs perfectly. The only software that I had to specifically un-install beforehand was Melodyne, since they track your authorization counts. After re-installing the things that I actually use, as I needed them, I found that I saved around 300 GB. It's still a bit of a mystery where, but I am not complaining (neither is my $SSD space).

Another reason: I have a friend who works at Avid, and he says they have far more support issues with people who did a simple upgrade from an older OS X version to Yosemite. Clean installs are working much better.

The problem now is getting the 5.6 GB Yosemite installer, when El Capitan is the current version. (I still haven't upgraded to El Cap, even though yesterday's update may have fixed the AU issues and my audio interfaces are both a-ok with it, but I may soon.) If you hadn't previously downloaded Yosemite, so it shows up in your Purchases tab with a Download button now, you may need to Google how to find it.

If you go straight to El Capitan, you can start the upgrade process in the Mac App Store, but halt it after download and before actual installation. Then use http://diskmakerx.com to create a bootable USB flash drive (8 GB minimum) from the downloaded file, boot from it, and off you go. That USB stick is a good emergency device to have around, too.

Thanks G
My 2x 2.8 2008 still rocks but i am seriously considering the expensive move to a new machine.
I guess if we go to new iMacs or macbook pro's not Mac Pro we get the onboard USB3/thunderbolt so the next hurdle is our big hard drives.
Is their a cheap solution ?
so we keep our data drives, i have 3 bays with around 6 gigs of stuff i need on the go.
I will check into it but always happy to hear your thoughts like we all used to do here.

Indeed, I already have USB 3.0 enclosures ready to go. Even though they'll be external, they have SATA II internally, so the speed should wash with what we have in the Mac Pro 2008. They're $24 each.

I'll probably end up getting a Thunderbolt hub to add Ethernet and more USB 3.0 ports, deciding between the CalDigit and OWC (each around $200), or just one of the nice Anker 7-port aluminum USB 3.0 hubs ($30).

Cool,
The New MacPro can't house any of the Drives too so that needs the same considerations.
I understand the speed should be comparable to our MP2008 machine drives but does it really mean
we are slowing down performance by using our old Sata drives instead of thunderbolt/raids ?
Hardly any of the new machines have built in CD.DVD bays too , needing the USB external, so new iMacs and MBP's are looking more level options.
Seriously thinking iMAc for the first time but a MBP like you are aiming for must be amazing freedom (at times) .
I still like a 30 inch Cinema Display so thats a pointer towards the IMac 5K.

Old, spinning hard drives can't spit out more than around 120 MB per second, so USB 3.0 is already overkill. You could still put them into a RAID config, but USB 3.0 could handle the throughput. Plus, I'm saving at least one TB port for my audio interface (UA Apollo Twin Duo), so I'm thinking any recording drives should be directly on my USB 3.0 (or 3.1) bus.

Optical disc, yep, covered already as well. :)

5.25" enclosure (SATA to USB 3.0) ~$40

Disc burner (went Blu-Ray just because the drive was $42 last month)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6827136250

Those both married up perfectly, and the drive is fast. As a bonus, I can do huge backups to BRD now (25 or 50 GB each), and the blank discs are cheap now, well under $1 ea in bulk.

There are also slim optical drives, like the cool-looking Samsung and LG models, starting under $30. I wanted a long-term reliable 5.25" mechanism that was also fix-able. These things tend to fail a lot.

Understood thanks, Not sure we have as good choice here in Oz.
I can get a 2nd hand 2013/14 Mac Pro 3-7 dual/quad, 512flash,16megram,with upgraded vid cards for similar price to a upgraded Imac5k with 4.o mhz dual/quad, 8 meg , The new iMac lets me sell my cinema display for some cash back too, both are tempting me.Any thoughts on these. Both are El Capitan.

If you go with that iMac, make sure you can easily upgrade the RAM to 16 GB (probably so with a 27" model), and be aware of the internal HDD/SSD size and speed, which will definitely not be easily upgraded.

I am honestly struggling to find the perfect "truck driver" Mac right now, as Steve Jobs liked to say. They all have drawbacks. The Mac Pro is pricey, and the entry level model is underpowered in both flash storage and GPU (for most apps that can't use dual cards). It would be a downgrade from my 2008 Mac Pro w/Radeon 5770 in some aspects, which is a non-starter. The iMac has been piecemeal updated, and in 2015, still comes with a slow spinning hard drive and a heat plan so poorly done, that full use of the GPU causes throttling of the entire machine, which kills full use of the GPU. That's why I'm targeting the MBP, even though you pay a premium for the teeny parts, I think it's the best of the lot (resisting the 2015 model, which was a stop-gap until Skylake). I sincerely hope that the threat from Microsoft, with their latest Surface release, gets Apple back into high gear on the Mac side.
